Vigils being held for former Calgary teacher accused of child sex abuse in Indonesia

Supporters of a former Calgary teacher incarcerated in Indonesia will gather Thursday evening in what they call a vigil for justice in Jakarta.

It’s being organized by the school where Neil Bantleman taught for 10 years.

Webber Academy’s President and Chairman Neil Webber said he was shocked to hear the news Bantleman had been accused of something as horrible as child sexual abuse.

“And there’s a lot of evidence we think that he’s been accused and incarcerated inappropriately,” he told 660News.

Thursday will mark 20 days since Bantleman’s imprisonment and to the best of Webber’s knowledge, the well-respected and admired educator has yet to be charged.

He and other supporters believe Bantleman is being accused by individuals hoping to obtain millions of dollars.

The candlelight vigil will be held in conjunction with another one being organized by the former Calgary teacher’s brother in the Greater Toronto Area.

According to social media there is also another vigil taking place in Okotoks near the Plaza town clock.

The event will get underway in Calgary at 8:00 p.m. at Webber Academy on 14th Ave, west of 85th Street S.W. outside the Performing Arts Centre.
