Celebration of life to be held for victims of Calgary’s worst mass murder

Space will likely be limited Wednesday as friends, family, students and faculty from Calgary’s post-secondary community come together for one last time to celebrate and say goodbye to five young people.

It’s been a little over two weeks since Lawrence Hong, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Zack Rathwell and Jordan Segura were brutally murdered while attending a party to celebrate the last day of class at the University of Calgary.

In response to the tragedy, the University has planned a Celebration of Life to honour their lives.

School communities from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary, as well as the victims’ friends and family will gather at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Doors open at 2p.m. with the service slated to get underway for 3p.m.

There will be free parking but mourners who wish to attend are being urged to carpool.

According to officials, they will pay tribute to those lives lost, while taking comfort and drawing strength from collective stories.

They will also reflect on their personalities, passions and interests.

Premier Dave Hancock and several of his cabinet ministers from inside the Alberta Legislature are said to be among some of the many dignitaries who will be in attendance.

Matt de Grood, 22, has been charged with five counts of first degree murder in relation to their deaths.

He’s currently undergoing a psychiatric assessment and is being held at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre.
