Flood mitigation symposium to take over BMO Centre in Calgary core

It’s the second of its kind and already has 700 people signed up to hear the latest in flood mitigation following last year’s major event.

The Alberta Flood Mitigation Symposium will take place Tuesday and it’s expected Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Robin Campbell will be giving an update as to where Alberta stands ahead of the flood season.

Spokesperson Jason Penner tells 660News the whole idea is to discuss watershed management, both drought and flood, although it’s likely we’ll hear more about the latter.

“Obviously flood is a little bit of a hotter topic, but we wanted to incorporate both so a lot of the presentations you’ll see, they have solutions for both,” he said.

According to Penner, keeping those affected by last year’s disaster up to date has been an ongoing process.

They plan to talk about an early warning system as well as advancements made in river forecasting.

“We’ll also have a couple of speakers, talking about lessons learned in other areas and bring it back to Alberta,” Penner explained.

The event will begin at 9a.m., and those who can’t attend are being invited to stream it online here.

The rainy or flood season in Southern Alberta is typically May to July 15th.
