Annual Arms Show takes over BMO Centre Saturday

Antique weapons, some dating as far back as the 17th century, will be the draw for firearm enthusiasts Saturday at the BMO Centre.

The annual show has been a fixture in Calgary for over 50 years, and organizer Hank Holm says it is very popular — both here at home and abroad.

“We have approximately 800 tables” (at today’s show), Holm tells 660News. “We are the largest and finest show of this kind in Canada.  We have people coming from the United States, sometimes from the United Kingdom and Switzerland.”

Some of the more popular pieces at the show each year have military significance.

“British military is a very popular one because of our heritage,” notes Holm. “The United States produced a lot of collectible items also.  So there’s a wide variety of arms from throughout the world.”

The show also has some strange pieces with a story.

“I know there’s such a thing as a cane gun” (that’s) “going to be there,” adds Holm who says the show also features weapons used by pirates!  “Back in the old days, people used to have walking sticks.  They would be either embedded with a sword or a firearm to protect themselves as they walked from pest control and things like this.”

The Arms Show runs Saturday from 9:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. at the BMO Centre.
