Investigators kept busy with slew of calls across city

A stolen vehicle, an intoxicated driver and a possible unintentional shooting; Calgary Police say those combined made for a very busy evening and early morning for its officers.

Their shift began around 7:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of Maitland Drive Northeast, after a man called 911 saying he had shot himself in the stomach.

“Police and EMS arrived and eventually gained entry into the residence to check on his welfare and it looked like had sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper chest,” Staff Sergeant Paul Wyatt said.

It’s still unclear on how it occurred.

“He was whisked away to the Foothills Hospital in serious, life-threatening condition, the residence is being held pending the outcome of an investigation,” he explained.

The man has since been upgraded to stable condition but he has yet to speak with investigators.

He’s slated to undergo more surgery late Tuesday morning.

A few hours later, around 12:45a.m., in the 1700 block of 52nd Street Southeast, police came across a Chevrolet Silverado being driven erratically.

The patrol car followed the pick-up and noticed the driver veering across lanes and over the median.

Wyatt says officers called for back-up and tried to pull the truck over.

“As the traffic stop was affected, the vehicle speeds up and slides into the ditch and loses control,” he says. “It was stopped by police and two occupants were apprehended.”

The duo was taken to District 4 Headquarters where the driver will likely face impaired driving charges.

An hour later, officers in the southwest in District 2 came across a 2012 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen.

It happened near the corner of 17th Avenue and 45th Street.

The K-9 unit was in the area and followed it until back-up could arrive; they tried to pull the vehicle over and that’s when the car sped off.

It was dumped, and Wyatt says the driver tried to flee on foot.

“The offender received a minor arm injury from the K-9 contact, he’s been checked out by EMS and is now back with us at the District 2 office,” he says.

Police will be looking for information including a location on where the car was taken from.
