Man killed by CTrain may have been distracted

A man struck by a CTrain Tuesday night in Marlborough has died as a result of his injuries.

It happened just before 8:30 near the intersection of 36th Avenue and 12th Street NE.

“A male was crossing the intersection, crossing from the east, when he was struck by a southbound train,” says Sergeant Darren Wood of the Traffic Section. “Indications from witnesses were the lights were functioning, all the bells and whistles were going and the male was crossing against the light.”

According to police, it appears the victim may have been wearing headphones at the time of the collision.

He was rushed to the Trauma Centre at the Foothills Hospital in life-threatening condition and later died.

Wood says members of the reconstruction team will look into what exactly was his state of mind leading up to the crash.

“It’s still way too early to say in the investigation to say at the moment,” he told 660News. “We’ll collect all the evidence at the scene, go over it, make a judgement and move forward.”

Investigators are still trying to figure out whether or not his music was on, or if he saw the train coming.

Not much is known about the victim, at last check with police they were still trying to identify him and then notify the next of kin.

Twenty to thirty people were on board the train at the time when it came to an abrupt stop; there were no other injuries.

Several lanes of 36th Street and the intersection at 12th Avenue northbound was kept closed for several hours while police collected evidence.
