AHS, independent expert to report on McKenzie Towne care home deaths

The company that operates a McKenzie Towne Care Facility, where two patients have died, has appointed an independent medical expert to look over the facility.

Revera CEO Jeffrey C. Lozon said Dr. Paul Katz will have unrestricted access to the care centre to identify any problems and have them quickly fixed following allegations of substandard care at

Fred Horne, Alberta’s Health Minister, said the AHS is also inspecting and he’s sent an onsite monitoring team to return with an audit in a couple of days.

“We’re also doing what’s called a care audit, which is an audit by healthcare professionals where they look at the treatment plans for residents – looking in particular how wound care is handled,” said Horne.

He also pointed out there have been no indications as of yet to prove allegations of substandard care at the Revera facility.

Kerry Towle, Wildrose Seniors Critic, is baffled by news of these deaths while the same facility was under investigation.

“I’ve been hearing from seniors all over Alberta saying that the system is broken, saying that there are huge problems in the system,” said Towle.

Reports came from two families this week about deaths of loved ones at the facility after developing severe bed sores.
