A new art space is celebrating its grand opening on 17th Avenue southeast: Art Box on 17th is a pop-up with a purpose.
The 5,000 square-foot building has been vacant since the paint store that used to be there, closed shop four years ago.
But the International Avenue BRZ teamed up with Calgary Arts Development to transform it into a flexible art space for exhibition and performance while providing studios for artists who live on the east side of town.
The BRZ’s Sharon Stevens says Art Box is already breathing life and culture into the neighbourhood.
“It creates more interest. We’re here we mow the lawn, we have gardens, we put up signs, and people in the neighbourhood are coming over and asking questions about what we’re doing,” says Stevens.
Art Box is located on the corner of 17th Avenue and 42nd Street southeast.
