Manitoba man dies after rock climbing incident near Lake Louise

Visitor safety specialists have recovered the body of a Manitoba man after a climbing accident west of Lake Louise, on Mount Victoria.

First responders got the call just before 7 o’clock Wednesday morning that a climber had slipped and fell 150 metres.

He sustained fatal injuries and was found a few hours later.

Spokesman Brad White says the climber and his partner were part of a club, visiting the popular peak, in Banff National Park at the time.

“The next of kin have been notified,” he tells 660News. “And the people that were involved with the other members of the group have all been looked after. They were brought down off the mountain and reunited with some of their other family members.”

He and his partner were not roped together at the time although White adds that’s not unusual for a climb like Mount Victoria.

The peak is approximately 3464 metres and is very popular with rock climbing enthusiasts.

His identity has not yet been released.

RCMP and the Medical Examiner are still investigating but foul play has been ruled out.
