MLB could suspend 20 players as part of drug probe: report

Major League Baseball will reportedly seek lengthy suspensions for as many as 20 players linked to a Miami clinic that allegedly provided performance-enhancing drugs.

The New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez and Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera are among the 20 players who could be impacted by the suspensions.

Cabrera has already served a 50-game suspension following a positive testosterone test.

ESPN, quoting two sources, reported that Anthony Bosch, the founder of the now-closed Biogenesis of America, has reached an agreement to cooperate with the MLB investigation.

“He has agreed to name some names, and it looks like there are many names to be named as many of the players in this scandal used code names,” Sportsnet baseball analyst Dirk Hayhurst said.

These players could each be looking at a 100-game suspension, and if the suspensions are in fact upheld, the performance enhancing drug scandal would be the largest in North American sports history.

“If the MLB is successful in building a case, they will go for a double suspension — 50 games for testing positive and 50 games for lying about it,” Hayhurst added.

MLB has sued Biogenesis of America and its operators, accusing them of scheming to provide banned PEDs to players in violation of their contracts.
