Sen. Duffy’s expense cases being referred to RCMP

OTTAWA – The heat has been turned up on embattled Senator Mike Duffy for living expenses he improperly claimed.

A Senate committee looking into the matter passed the case to the RCMP Tuesday night after finding what it calls a troubling pattern.

That includes several days in 2011 when Duffy claimed living expenses while he campaigned for the Conservatives in that year’s election.

Duffy was a no-show at last night’s committee meeting.

The committee also asked the Mounties to look into the 90-thousand dollars given to Duffy to repay the government for his living expenses to which he was not entitled.

A cheque for that amount was given to Duffy by Nigel Wright, who was at the time Prime Minister Harper’s chief of staff.

Wright resigned 10 days ago after the payment became public knowledge.

Prime Minister Harper insists he had no prior knowledge of the 90-thousand-dollar payment Wright made to Duffy.
