Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,695.14 down 54.76 points):

Strateco Resources Inc. (TSX:RSC). Miner. Down 7.5 cents, or 62.50 per cent, at 4.5 cents on 9.43 million shares. The stock finished the day at its lowest level since 2001 after the Quebec government announced that it will impose a moratorium on uranium mining in the province, pending an independent study on the environmental impact of the industry. Strateco has spent more than $120 million at its Matoush uranium project in northern Quebec.

BlackBerry (TSX:BB). Wireless technology. Up 26 cents, or 1.72 per cent, at $15.35 on 7.91 million shares. Last week, the former Research In Motion reported strong fourth-quarter profits, reversing a loss from the same period a year ago. BlackBerry said it expects to “approach break-even” results in the first quarter and will roll out a wide array of new smartphones this year.

Orbite Aluminae Inc. (TSX:ORT). Mining technology. Down 18 cents, or 11.61 per cent, at $1.37 on 3.56 million shares. The metals and mining sector led 12 of the 13 subgroups in the red. The subgroup shed 1.68 per cent to 859.83 points on the main index.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Down four cents, or 0.99 per cent, at $3.99 on 3.43 million shares.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Oil and gas. Up 39 cents, or 1.28 per cent, at $30.83 on 2.72 million shares.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX:CNQ). Oil and gas. Down 21 cents, or 0.64 per cent, at $32.36 on 2.55 million shares.

Toronto Venture Exchange (1,089.56 down 9.44 points):

Fire River Gold Corp. (TSXV:FAU). Mineral explorer. Down half a cent, or 14.29 per cent, at three cents on 2.4 million shares.

HRT Partipacoes em Petroleo S.A. (TSXV:HRP). Oil and gas. Up 13 cents, or 14.61 per cent, at $1.02 on 2.27 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

New Flyer Industries Inc. (TSX:NFI). Heavy-duty transit bus maker. Down 12 cents, or 1.15 per cent, at $10.30 on 31,983 shares. The Phoenix transit system has ordered 120 buses from New Flyer to be delivered next year. The Winnipeg-based company didn’t disclose the value of the order, which is for 40-foot buses that will use compressed natural gas as fuel.

Pacific Rim Mining Corp. (TSX:PMU). Gold explorer. Up a penny, or 18.18 per cent, at 6.5 cents on 17,020 shares. The company’s U.S. subsidiary has filed a US$315-million damage claim against the Government of El Salvador. The claim by PacRim Cayman LLC is part of arbitration hearing over a failure by the government to issue necessary mining licences for the company’s El Dorado gold project.
