Latest numbers show Alberta could soon pass BC in population

Alberta is closing the gap on British Columbia when it comes to population growth thanks to a stronger economy.

That’s according to ATB Financial Chief Economist Todd Hirsch who tells 660News if current growth continues, we could pass our neighbours to the west in 8 years.

“You never want to make too strong an assumption,” he says. “Alberta’s economy could slow down, our population growth could slow down, British Columbia’s could well pick-up but Alberta’s population has been growing faster than BC’s for quite some time.”

Looking at the latest figures from Statistics Canada, Alberta’s population growth sat at three per cent which is more than double the national rate and made it the fastest growing province in terms of population.

“Even if it’s not quite eight years, it does seem that Alberta is destined at some point to surpass BC as the third most populous province,” he explains.
