Peeling back the numbers on one of Canada’s favourite contests

It’s not just a contest; Tim Hortons’ Roll Up the Rim to Win has become a Canadian custom.

But do you know what the odds are in avoiding those dreaded words, “Please play again”?

According to officials at the North American chain, from donuts to a brand new SUV, the odds of winning are one in six.

Alberta has been lumped in with Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Yukon for a total of 41-million contest cups.

Anyone hoping for the big prize, a Toyota Rav 4, can rest assured that there are five winning cups in Alberta’s region.

Content Brand Manager Dana Brochu tells The Calgary Sun they’ve been randomly distributed across the country based on consumption; the more an area consumes the more chances it gets.

For example, the odds aren’t great when you compare Wildrose java drinkers to those in Atlantic Canada; Brochu says the odds of someone winning the SUV in this province are one in 8.2-million, while Tim Horton’s customers in the Maritimes have a one in 4.6-million shot at the brand new vehicle.

But Brochu says in the last few years, Alberta has fared better than Ontario.

This year the coffee giant is giving away a total of 40 Toyota Rav 4’s from coast to coast.
