Premier insists moving medevac services in Edmonton wasn’t her government’s decision

Alberta’s Premier says upcoming changes to medevac flights in Northern Alberta were not her goverment’s doing.

Alison Redford notes it was Edmonton residents who voted to close the city’s downtown airport five years ago.

Physicans in Northern Alberta are raising questions about patient care because those flights will soon be re-directed to Edmonton International Airport which is closer to Leduc.

redford says if problems with the new service pop up, the province will adress them as they arrive.

“I promise you, if we find that after a few months we need to alter the system to better serve your needs, then we’ll do that,” says Redford, commenting on potential problems with the move. “Because they’re your family’s needs and your community’s needs.”

“That’s why, in preparation for the airport’s closure, we instructed the Health Quality Council of Alberta to review the steps that we need to take to ensure patient safety, your family’s safety,” adds the Premier, noting that new safeguards have been put in place to try to mitigate any possible problems.

She says proper facilities have been established at Edmonton International to handle the new medevac flights.
