TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,789.02 up 40.87 points):

TORC Oil and Gas Ltd. (TSX:TOG). Oil and gas. Up a penny, or 0.48 per cent, at $2.11 on 13,837,467 shares. The energy sector led the advancers on the main index, rising 1.03 per cent to 256.24 points. The price of March crude oil advanced 48 cents US to $97.51 at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurer. Up 12 cents, or 0.79 per cent, at $15.40 on 12,805,007 shares. The financials sector was up 0.09 per cent to 198.61 points.

Rainy River Resources Ltd. (TSX:RR). Gold explorer. Down 14 cents, or 3.66 per cent, at $3.68 on 7,375,736 shares.

Cline Mining Corp. (TSX:CMK). Mine explorer. Up five cents, or 52.63 per cent, at 14.5 cents on 6,829,246 shares. The Toronto-based company appointed former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Brian Tobin and Mark Haywood to its board of directors on Monday.

San Gold Corp. (TSX:SGR). Miner. Down 5.5 cents, or 12.36 per cent, at 39 cents on 6,810,497 shares.

Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY). Oil and gas. Up 55 cents, or 2.04 per cent, at $27.48 on 5,642,138 shares. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. gave the thumbs up to CNOOC’s US$15.1-billion takeover of Calgary-based Nexen. The agency’s approval clears the way for the deal to close the week of Feb. 25.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,198.94 up 2.74 points):

Border Petroleum Corp. (TSXV:BOR). Oil and gas. Down half a cent, or 10 per cent, at 4.5 cents on 5,996,455 shares.

Petromanas Energy Inc. (TSXV:PMI). Oil and gas explorer. Up three cents, or 27.27 per cent, at 14 cents on 4,690,998 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Unchanged at $4.09 on 2,955,491 shares. An industry association said that the plane and train maker retained its position as the world’s largest business jet maker in 2012 despite an 11 per cent drop in the value of its global deliveries in the fourth quarter.

TransCanada Corp. (TSX:TRP). Pipeline. Down 69 cents, or 1.43 per cent, at $47.56 on 2,171,441 shares. The pipeline giant said its fourth-quarter earnings were dragged lower by power plant outages and weaker contributions from its natural gas pipelines. Revenues rose to $2.09 billion from $2.02 billion.
