TORONTO – The Canadian dollar closed at 99.57 cents U-S, down 16-100ths from Friday’s close.

The S-and-P/T-S-X composite index lost 53.08 points to 12,748.15.

Volume at 4:15 p.m. E-T was 250.38 (m) million shares.

The Dow Jones industrial average slid 21.73 points to 13,971.24.

The Nasdaq composite index lost 1.87 points to 3,192.

In the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures price for April dropped 17 dollars, 80 cents U-S to 1,649 dollars, 10 cents per ounce.

The crude March contract gained one dollar, 31 cents U-S to 97 dollars, three cents per barrel.
