Super storm across Eastern Canada grounds flights in and out of Calgary

Plan ahead, check the status and check often if you have a flight this weekend.

A monster storm across Eastern Canada has grounded flights in and out of Calgary International leaving many passengers stranded.

As of 7 o’clock Friday morning, departing flights to Montreal, Newark, Toronto, St, John’s and Hamilton were flashing red.

Arrivals into Calgary from Toronto, Hamilton and London have also been cancelled.

There are some planes getting to Eastern Canada but not all of them.

Both WestJet and Air Canada and airports like Pearson International and Halifax-Stanfield have issued travel advisories and are warning their customers to expect delays.

Westjet is also offering those customers affected by this winter wallop a change in travel plans without having to pay the penalty.

Meteorologist Richard Zurawski from our sister station News 95.7 in Halifax says our province is partly to blame thanks to an ‘Alberta Clipper” making it’s way across the country.

“And then we’ve got another system coming up the eastern seaboard which is going to graze New York and Boston and the two of them are going to meet right over the Maritimes, just south of Nova Scotia,” he says. “Right now we’ve got a blizzard warning in effect.”

“I haven’t seen a storm like this in at least 3 or 4 years and it doesn’t happen too frequently, but you know 40 to 50 centimetres is verging on a really big storm,” Zurawski adds.

He doesn’t expect things will taper off until Saturday evening.
