Liberal MLA calls for progressive politicians to unite under one banner

With the next provincial election more than three years away, a Calgary Liberal MLA says now is a great time to try to unite some of the political parties.

Kent Hehr tells 660News by bringing parties like the Liberals, NDP and Greens together, they could finally end more than 40 years of Tory rule.

“It should be a value system that carries the day, not worrying about what our name says we are,” Hehr tells 660News, adding the idea came to mind after seeing the results of the recent Calgary Centre federal by-election.

He adds the Liberals, NDP and Greens agree on a lot of issues, so why not band together?

“Put a coat of paint on something,” says Hehr. “Let’s run on our value system and let’s be a viable political force here in Alberta.”

Hehr says the merger of political parties might not topple the Tory goverment, but it could have prevented the Wildrose from forming the official opposition.

He says there is no time table as to when he would like to see the creation of what could be called a big tent party, but quickly adds the idea deserves to be explored.
