Study suggests home proximity to bars affects drinking habits

A new study is suggesting people who live near a bar tend to drink larger amounts than those who live further away.

In a large-sample study, researchers in Finland followed 55,000 adults for more than seven years.

The researchers found those who moved and lived closed to bars were more likely to increase their drinking habits.

The researchers used GPS devices to track how close subjects lived to the nearest bar, finding that for each kilometre closer they lived to a bar their chance of becoming a heavy drinker increased by up to 17 per cent.

The study was correlational and researchers said their could be an undetermined third factor that explained the increase in drinking, such as those who live near bars doing so intentionally.
