Health Canada warning parents to speak to health professional before using thickening formula

Health Canada is warning parents and caregivers to consult with a health professional before using a thickening product used for breast milk or infant formula.

The product, “Simply Thick”, is made to help feed babies who have swallowing disorders.

However, there are concerns about the xanthan gum ingredient, which has since been linked to some cases of necrotizing enterocolitis, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Originally seen only in premature infants, a couple of full-term babies have since been diagnosed with the condition.

Health Canada said further studies are needed, but in the meantime, parents and health professionals need to be aware of any risks.
