Conservatives prepare second budget implementation bill

OTTAWA, Ont.- Pensions for Members of Parliament and public sector workers are up for debate as the government prepares to table its second budget implementation bill Thursday afternoon.

This is the follow-up to the first omnibus bill which was widely criticized for including several measures that the opposition claims shouldn’t have been in there. Opposition also believes the second bill could double the size of the first, which was 425 pages.

Finance minister Jim Flaherty said there will not be any surprises.

“It was all in the budget, this is the economic action plan for the country,” Flaherty said, “there are lots of budget provisions, read the budget.”

One of the key changes will be to the pensions of those who work in or for the government.

It is expected MP’s and public workers will soon have to chip in a lot more of their own money to their retirement plans which are mainly funded with taxpayer cash.

Opposition is calling for the bill to be split up, so important measures can be properly studied.
