Bond’s 50th birthday marked in Maclean’s special edition

To celebrate 50 years of the Bond franchise, Maclean’s Magazine released a special commemorative edition on Wednesday.

The first Bond film “Dr. No” premiered in London in 1962, starring Scottish actor Sean Connery.

Maclean’s film critic Brian D. Johnson said the enduring franchise is likely to carry on at least another 50 years.

“If Hollywood is still around, I think that James Bond will be right there at the front of the pack because he’s a character that people don’t get tired of.”

While six actors have portrayed the secret agent, only four rocked the role, according to Johnson Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

Still, one Bond triumphed over the others, he said.

“To my mind, Sean Connery was the best Bond but I’d add a proviso to that, which is that Daniel Craig has kind of trumped all of the Bonds.”

The 23rd film “Skyfall,” starring Craig will premiere worldwide in London later this month.

“It’s interesting that Daniel Craig has taken the role and made it his own. He has taken command of the role,” Johnson said.
