Yahoo moves away from BlackBerry for its employees

Internet search company Yahoo is saying bye-bye to the BlackBerry.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said employees will be getting new smartphones, but the company is no longer supporting the BlackBerry platform.

Mayer said staffers will be getting a new smartphone of their choice — from Apple, Samsung, Nokia, or HTC — and in addition to the purchase of the phones, Yahoo will also pay employees’ voice and data bills.

Off the list though is anything by Research in Motion. Mayer said she wants employees to use what customers are using — effectively saying the BlackBerry platform is obsolete.

While the offer will likely go a long way toward boosting morale at Yahoo, which has struggled against Google, it’ll likely further hurt employees at RIM as the latter has been struggling to regain lost market share.

Mayer is placing her faith in market leaders iOS, Android, and the recently unveiled Windows Phone 8.
