Foreign Affairs issues non-essential travel warning due to Isaac

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is advising travellers to avoid non-essential travel to areas in the path of Tropical Storm Isaac.

The United States National Hurricane Centre in Miami has issued advisories for Tropical Storm Isaac, which is forecast to become a hurricane.

Areas included in the warning are northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Morgan City, Louisiana to Indian Pass, Florida, including metropolitan New Orleans, Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

Canadians travelling to those areas are being advised to monitor local news and weather reports, follow the advice of local authorities and contact their travel agent to determine whether the situation will disrupt travel arrangements.

So far no flights out of Pearson International Airport heading to Florida have been cancelled.

Stranded travellers are taking that as a good sign.

Susan from Victoria has been waiting patiently to head to Cuba. Her flight on Saturday was cancelled due to Isaac.

“We’ve been here for two days,” she said. “We’re booked in so we should be (leaving today).”
