Al Pacino coming back to Broadway in a revival of Mamet’s ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Al Pacino is returning to the ugly world of real estate — he’s revisiting “Glengarry Glen Ross” on Broadway this fall.

Producers said Thursday that the Oscar winner will play the role of Shelly Levene in a revival the marks the 30th anniversary of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play about the backbiting world of salesmen.

Pacino, who played the role of Ricky Roma in a 1992 film version of the same play, was last on Broadway as Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice,” earning a Tony nomination.

Previews of “Glengarry Glen Ross” will start on Oct. 16 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and an opening night has been set for Nov. 11. This is the second revival of the play on Broadway and it will be directed by Daniel Sullivan, who directed Pacino in “The Merchant of Venice.”

The play will have competition from a new Mamet play — his “The Anarchist co-starring Debra Winger and Patti LuPone will begin performances on Nov. 13. Mamet will be directing “The Anarchist.”

Pacino, who starred as mob leader Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” movies, won a best-actor Oscar for 1992’s “Scent of a Woman.” He has two Tonys, as featured actor in “Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?” in 1969 and for lead actor in “The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel” in 1977.

Pacino and Mamet most recently worked together on a Phil Spector biopic for HBO, which is to premiere next year. Pacino plays the famed music producer who was jailed after the slaying of a model. It was written and directed by Mamet.
