Court grants bail to student protester whose sister just died, can attend rites

MONTREAL – A Quebec student activist who was reportedly on his way to his sister’s funeral when he was arrested will be able to say his final farewell now that he has been granted bail.
No date has actually been set for the service for Mathieu Girard’s sibling, whom he discovered lifeless on Saturday.
Girard was ordered released on $2,000 bail after a court appearance in Montreal on Tuesday. He must also follow several conditions such as respecting a curfew and staying away from demonstrations.
The court also said he can travel to Saguenay, Que., for his sister’s funeral when the date is decided.
The 19-year-old is charged with mischief causing damages in excess of $5,000, conspiring to commit a criminal act and wearing a disguise with a criminal intent. He is suspected of throwing bricks on Montreal subway tracks in April.
He was arrested on Monday by Quebec provincial police as he travelled with his family near St-Hyacinthe. His lawyer originally said he was on his way to his 30-year-old sister’s funeral but since insisted she meant they were heading to the place where the funeral would be held.
