Ian Williams wins $10,000 Danuta Gleed award for ‘Not Anyone’s Anything’

TORONTO – Toronto author Ian Williams has won the $10,000 Danuta Gleed Literary Award for “Not Anyone’s Anything.”

The award is given for the best first English-language collection of short fiction by a Canadian author in the past year.

Jury members called Williams’ collection “brilliant” and praised his writing as “fresh, funny and intelligent.”

Runners-up Jessica Westhead and Daniel Griffin will each receive $500.

Toronto’s Westhead was up for her book “And Also Sharks,” which the jury called a “fascinating accomplishment.”

Victoria-based Griffin, meanwhile, saw his “Stopping for Strangers” praised as an “impressive first book.”

The three finalists were culled from a short list of five books that also included Andrew J. Borkowski’s “Copernicus Avenue” and Johanna Skibsrud’s “This Will Be Difficult to Explain.”
