Study calls for road tolls across Canada

A group of researchers from the University of Calgary is calling for a “pay for play” system on Canada’s roadways.

The controversial report says the current system of using property taxes to pay for road work and infrastructure is outdated.  The study says road tolls should be used instead on major highways and roads across the country.

Study author Jack Mintz says that a pay per use system for Canada’s roadways simply follows similar fees in place for other forms of transportation

“We (the users) fully finance our air transportation, rail transportation, at least on the commercial side… it’s all financed, ” Mintz tells 1310News. “But we have to deal with roads, we have to deal with transit in cities, and we have to figure out ways to finance all of this.  It can’t just be property tax-based alone.”

Besides ensuring that the people who use the roads will help pay for their upkeep, Mintz adds that tolls will encourage more people to carpool and use public transit, meaning the benefits will be environment as well as financial.
