Protesters say ex-student convicted in Rutgers webcam case does not deserve jail time

TRENTON, N.J. – The mother of the former Rutgers student convicted of hate crimes in a webcam spying case says her son does not deserve jail time.
Sabitha Ravi (RAH’-vee) told several hundred people at a rally in Trenton that her son Dharun (dah-ROON’) is suffering after being convicted of bias intimidation in March.
Several hundred supporters rallied Monday outside the New Jersey Statehouse on behalf of the former Rutgers University student convicted of bias intimidation for using a webcam to see his roommate kissing another man.
He faces up to 10 years in prison.
The 20-year-old was convicted in March. The case garnered national attention because his roommate, Tyler Clementi, killed himself in September 2010, just days after the spying.
The protesters also called for a change in the state’s hate-crime laws.
