Violent protests erupt in Montreal

MONTREAL – Chaos has erupted in downtown Montreal as students attempted to disrupt a speech by Premier Jean Charest on northern development.

A group of students, upset with tuition-fee hikes, managed to get into the convention centre, delaying the symposium on the premier’s pet project.

Outside, students and environmentalists are clashing with police as rubber bullets, projectiles and tear gas are being exchanged.

Two police officers and two students have been injured.

Student groups have organized demonstrations across the Quebec including Gatineau over a proposed increase in tuition fees.
