Number 6 of Top 11 of 2011

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – His death touched millions, whether they agreed with his politics or not.  News1130 continues our Top 11 of 2011 with federal politics and the passing of Jack Layton.

“We can look after each other better than we do today.” Jack Layton spoke to reporters for what would end up being the last time on July 25th.

“If I’ve tried to bring anything to federal politics, it’s the idea that hope and optimism should be at their heart.”

He would pass away from cancer on August 22nd, not even a month after that final news conference.

Layton’s gaunt and frail appearance that day was in stark contrast to the vibrant, plain spoken political warrior who guided the NDP to Official Opposition status in the May 2nd election.
Knowing the end was near, he wrote these words to Canadians, two days before his passing.

“Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
