Most hockey concussions happen in first period, research shows

Research from St. Michael’s Hospital finds most concussions in the National Hockey League occur during the first period.

That could be because players and coaches are trying to set the tone of the game or because players have more energy and adrenaline at the start.

The study also finds just as many concussions occur in the open ice as along the boards and that more  forwards suffer concussions than defencemen.

St. Michael’s is hosting a national conference on hockey concussions Saturday.
