Sept. 11 national memorial site opens to general public

NEW YORK – For the first time, the general public will tread on the ground where the World Trade Centre’s twin towers fell.

The U.S. National 9/11 Memorial & Museum opened at 10 a.m.

It’s already likely the most popular site in New York. Entry is by ticket only, and there’s a large waiting list as tickets have been sold out for weeks.

Paulette from Louisiana was able to get a ticket. “I never saw the [towers] when they were standing. To be in there is sacred; it’s holy ground to us,” she said.

But, walking on the ground where the twin towers fell, and where almost 2,800 people were killed, will be emotional.

“I’m sure that there’s like a whole different feeling, aura and spiritualness about the inside. I’m moved, and I’m awed, and I’m humbled,” Paulette said.

The heart of the site features two pools fed by waterfalls, which as it was told to reporter Carl Hanstke, sound like a beautiful whisper that drowns out the noise of the city.
