Air Canada now charging for first checked bag to US

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Your first checked bag on an Air Canada flight to the US will now cost $25 and the travel industry isn’t surprised by this latest charge.

Air Canada says this fee offsets fuel prices, but Brad Davies with Virtually There Travel says it’s actually in line with what a lot of the US carriers have in operation already:

“It’s actually a good time to be a consumer because there is a lot of competition for your dollar… and for that reason, information in today’s world is absolutely key when you are travelling. I would squeeze as much as you can into your carry-on.”

Travel consultant Claire Newell actually thought this fee would have come into effect sooner. “Anywhere I’ve travelled in the world, no matter which airline… virtually all of them charge for a first bag. The fee ranges from $15 to sometimes $40 or $50 per bag.”

WestJet maintains it won’t charge a fee for the first checked bag on any flights.
