No faith rioters will go to court: Poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We saw the ugly side of our society during last week’s riot and the fallout continues.  A new Angus Reid poll shows we support police and we want those responsible for the damage prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

But half of all people in BC believe less than 20 per cent of those accused will ever go to court.  Nearly three-quarters of those asked disagree with the idea that there was no way to know the big crowd would ever get violent.

“They should have stepped in a little bit sooner.  From what I saw in the video as soon as that first truck was rolled over they should have stepped in and started dispersing the crowd right away before that got out of hand,” says one Vancouver man.

Despite what we witnessed last week, should Vancouver still play host to big, public parties?  Greek Day is this upcoming Sunday, the Celebration of Light is on track for the end of July.

The poll found half of all British Columbians want street parties kept alive.  However, a whopping 94 per cent believe the parties should only exist with a larger police presence.

“It was a few individuals who started it and I’m not going to let those individuals get in the way of me enjoying the city,” says one woman.

According to Angus Reid three-in-five people support banning the sale of booze on the day of a sporting event.
