Lions add an Ivy Leaguer to the den

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions selected wide receiver Marco Iannuzzi with their first round selection in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft.  He was taken sixth overall.

Iannuzzi played at Harvard University for four years.  The versatile wide receiver, who doubles as a kick-returner, averaged 34.5 yards per kick-off return in 2010.

He is the first player to have two kick-off returns for a touchdown in a single season for the Crimson.  During his career, Iannuzzi averaged 26.5 yards per return, which places him atop Harvard’s all-time list.

The Lions swapped three picks with the Calgary Stampeders at the beginning of the draft.  The Stamps received BC’s third, 26th and 34th picks, while the Lions recieved Calgary’s sixth, 11th and 37th overall picks.

BC used the 11th pick to select kicker Hugh O’Neill out of the University of Alberta. The Lions made room for O’Neill after trading kicker Sean Whyte to the Montreal Alouettes for the Als’ first round selection in the 2012 CFL Draft.

Other selections for the Lions on the day include defensive back Michael Carter (19th), offensive line-man Yannick Sage (37th) and defensive lineman Chris Hodgson (42nd).
