VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Who needs a home computer when your phone can do most the work? It appears that’s the mentality most people have these days, as smartphones have outsold PCs for the first time ever.
A report by research group IDC finds more than 100 million smartphones were sold in the last three months of 2010; it’s an 87 per cent year-over-year jump. Compare that with PCs, which sold 92.1 million units over the same period, at a modest increase of only five percent.
The spike in smartphone sales is due in part to falling prices, as it’s not hard to find brand new models on sale for $100, with some retailers discounting them to a single penny.
When it comes to who rules the smartphone hardware roost, Nokia placed first, followed by Apple. Blackberry makers Research in Motion take third.
