Four Canadians detained after brawl that killed Ontario teen in Dominican

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Four Canadians have been detained in the Dominican Republic and are accused of taking part in a brawl that killed an Ontario teen.

Police say 19-year-old Jordan Morrison of Barrie, Ont., died on the way to hospital after a severe beating outside a nightclub at a beach resort. The fight, which involved bottles, began over unspecified “personal differences.”

A Foreign Affairs spokesman in Ottawa says the department is aware of the detention of four Canadians citizens in the Dominican but would not comment further.

The four Canadians and an Algerian allegedly involved in the brawl are aged 19 to 21 and were treated for minor injuries after the fracas at the Grand Paradise Bavaro hotel in Punta Cana.

Esteban Baez, a court translator, says prosecutors have questioned the five individuals and charges are expected to be laid against two of them on Monday. The other three will likely be released.

Police have identified the Canadians as Boutoita Abderrain, 19, Sid Ahmed Zakaria Kara, Dmytro Aref Yev and Badr Elmanoizy, all 21, and the Algerian as Bouzid Redha, also 21.
