BC SPCA calls puppy beating a sick case of animal cruelty

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC SPCA is calling it an extreme case of animal cruelty.

Marcie Moriarty with the society says she can only imagine what the three-month-old pitbull went through when it was severely beaten in a Victoria hotel suite yesterday morning. “It’s a sick, sick case.”

The puppy died of multiple broken bones and internal injuries. A 24-year-old man has been arrested and faces charges of animal cruelty. Moriarty says, “Each year, we have a number of cases where animals have been beaten, sometimes to death like this. We’ve had success with respect to getting convictions in similar cases.”

She says, “They can get up to a lifetime ban on owning animals, and up to six months in jail. We’d hope in this case that the courts look at this and give a harsh punishment.”

Moriarty adds the BC SPCA is not handling this case, but having the police in charge could mean a longer jail sentence if the man is convicted.
