Lower Mainland roads getting a lot of attention

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – We’re not expected to get snow until Thursday, but city crews across Metro Vancouver are preparing for nastier weather.

Surrey’s deputy manager of operations Rob Costanzo says crews have been salting and sanding roads around the clock since Friday.

“Given it’s going to be dry and cold the next few days, we’re going to be applying a brine solution, which is a 30 per cent salt mixed with water solution,” he explains.

Meanwhile, Vancouver maintenance boss Murray Wightman says his crews have been busy mixing salt and sand as well.

“We’re still having a lot of problems with water leaks and various things like that across the city, so we’re treating roads with a sand/salt mix during this cold weather, particularly with this wind chill right now,” Wightman points out.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to -12 overnight.
