Cold weather makes for a busy weekend for homeless shelters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the temperatures dip below zero, things are getting very busy for homeless shelters around Vancouver. With our first cold snap of the season,  it seems the Homeless Emergency Action Team Shelters are making a difference.

Derek Weiss with the Union Gospel Mission says their usual capacity is 37, but a third worker was added and 52 people stayed there on Thursday night. “There is enough room and that’s exciting. We’re over our normal capacity. We’ve been able to put some people in hallways, which isn’t optimal, but for emergency situations it will do.”

He adds they’re also focusing on outreach, making sure those who don’t want to come inside are prepared to face the elements.
