World leaders condemn Iran, North Korea

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Prime Minister Stephen Harper wrapped up the G8 summit in Huntsville, Ont., Saturday.

He delivered his statement ahead of the G20 summit in Toronto.

“We have refocused the G8 on its strengths: development, peace and of course, global security,” Harper said in his statement.

“The G8 has committed an additional $5-billion (U.S.) over the next five years, and with our partners as I’ve mentioned yesterday, bringing the total to $7.3-billion on the Muskoka initiative on maternal, new born and child health,” he added.

Harper also said the leaders agreed to the implementation of UN Resolution 1929. The deal reportedly came together at the very last moment.

This is considered a win for the PM, who pushed for the condemnation of Iran and North Korea.

“The governments of Iran and North Korea have chosen to acquire weapons to threaten their neighbours; the world must see to it that what they spend on these weapons will not be the only cost that they incur,” he said.

The final communiqué called on Iran to respect the rule of law and it condemned North Korea, holding it responsible for the sinking of the South Korean warship in May.

Leaders and their entourages will now head south to join other leaders at the larger G20 summit in Toronto.

Demonstrators have prepared to greet the leaders with, what will likely be, the biggest summit protest so far.
