Mayor Miller praises police in their response during G20 protest

TORONTO, Ont. – In a hastily called news conference, Saturday, Toronto Mayor David Miller spoke out about how the escalating violence was distracting the events behind the lines at the G20.

Miller added he would not dignify calling the people that were being violent “protesters,” instead, he referred to them as “criminals.”

He explained the small group is intent on causing mayhem in the midst of an otherwise democratic, legitimate G20 protest.

Miller did offer his praise to the police officers for their response.

“This wasn’t a protest in which there was some sort of confrontation. It was a deliberate act by people who seem to make it their business to commit these violent acts. That’s something that’s very difficult to control,” he said.

The mayor did not respond to questions about hosting the G20 downtown, which were raised earlier over fear violence could break out.

He continued by assuring Torontonians that the city itself is safe as the protest is confined to a small area of the downtown core. However, he advised people to stay away from where the violence was happening.
