James Cameron-Come see for yourself

Avatar director James Cameron has been invited to take a tour of Alberta’s oilsands.

Environment Minister Rob Renner extended the invitation Wednesday following the Canadian-born filmmaker’s comments Tuesday, calling the tarsands a black eye to Canada’s environmental image.

Renner says if Cameron comes here, he would learn that Alberta is working to mitigate the effect of the oilsands and has rigorous standards in place to reclaim the land.

“We have a strong regulatory regime that ensures we protect the environment, and that part of the story needs to be told as well as the part of the story that deals with what we believe to be a temporary environmental impact.”

Cameron also says Alberta should convert to wind power, but Renner says that can’t be the only solution.
