Expert: Volcanic ash won’t ruin our summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Seeing pictures of that famous plume of ash responsible for the air travel chaos might have you wondering how it’s affecting our atmosphere.

An SFU volcanologist says you have little to worry about.

“From a climate perspective, it’s not going to change things at all,” says Glyn Williams-Jones.

No need to be fearful about air quality, either. “This is a concern definitely close to the volcano in Iceland, because that’s where the largest particles of ash are coming out.”

He says the carbon footprint has been reduced, rather than worsened, by the plume, because of all of the flights that were grounded. The plume is largely water vapour, with some carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

When the volcano will go to sleep once again is anyone’s guess. Williams-Jones says even though it seems to be losing steam, it could rumble back into action at any time.
