Expert: Volcanic ash will disrupt travel for weeks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More flights out of YVR were cancelled Sunday as the volcanic ash cloud grounds flights across the globe, but don’t expect the travel nightmare to be over even after the air clears.

Claire Newell from Jubilee Travel has a warning for passengers.  “The backlog of this is going to be enormous to get through. Even if it it stopped tomorrow it would still take at least ten days to two weeks to get back to normal, to get all the people that are displaced back to where they’re supposed to be and then catch up for the people going to their destination.”

She adds the volcano erupting was just bad timing for the travel season.  “Come next week, we hit the start of real peak season to Europe. The charter flights that have been flying down south to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii, they switch gears and go to Europe.”

Newell says she has never seen a situation like this in her 20 year travel career. She suggests stranded passengers who can’t get their money back should ask their airline for a credit.
