No street hockey in Cow-Town

A few families in the northwest are taking issue with a little-known bylaw in Calgary that prohibits playing street hockey.

One parent says he was shocked when bylaw services came by the other night and shut down a game his son was playing in.

Len Lucas tells CTV his son was very upset when he heard he couldn’t play the nation’s pastime outside his home.

Bylaw services say it’s illegal to play street hockey in Calgary and are defending their stance over safety concerns.

They say the problem isn’t the hockey, rather the complaints about kids not moving off the road or damaging vehicles and property.

Some city police actually carry sticks in their patrol cars in an effort to connect with the community.  Officers say they try to initiate games with kids to show them how to safely play street hockey and use common sense.
