Hundreds flock to Project Homeless Connect

Hundreds of Calgarians who are homeless, or are at risk of living on the street, found some help at an event in the city’s downtown core on Saturday.

According to the Calgary Homeless Foundation, an estimated 16,000 Calgary families are just a paycheque away from being homeless.

About 50 agencies converged on the Suncor Energy Centre for the latest Project Homeless Connect, offering everything from medical aid to employment counselling.

Tim Richter, President and CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation tells 660News the vast majority of people who experience homelessness will only need help for a short time before they get themselves back on track.

“About 80 per cent of the homeless are in and out in less than six months and this (the event) is important because it helps people help themselves. It makes it easier for folks to get the help they need to get themselves off the street and to make that period of homelessness as short as possible.”

As many as 800 people were in attendance.
