Local group continues to fight for airport tunnel funding

Funding from the feds and the province for the airport tunnel is looking pretty bleak, but a group committed to making the project happen hasn’t given up hope yet.

On Thursday, joint funding was announced for improvements to Deerfoot Trail, but it didn’t include money for a city-proposed tunnel at the Calgary airport.

Grant Galpin with the Airport Trail Access Committee tells 660News they are meeting Friday with Calgary MLA Yvonne Fritz, who is also the minister of children and youth services.

He says Fritz has agreed to try and help them arrange a meeting with the province’s transportation minister to try and negotiate a position to make the province understand the impacts of not having the tunnel long term in the Calgary area.

Galpin adds, the group will also meet this weekend with Calgary MP and federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice.

He hopes they can convince the province and feds to realize how important the airport tunnel is to Calgarians.
